Coniunctio artis et ignis — The Union of Art and Fire

A Finnish non-profit association dedicated to the art, expertise and responsible practice of fireworks.

Fireworks with purpose

Pyroteknikkojen Kilta ry is a Finnish non-profit association dedicated to promoting the art of fireworks, developing pyrotechnic expertise, and supporting the safe and responsible production of fireworks displays.

Founded on 22 April 2026, the Guild brings together people who share a passion for fireworks, technical excellence, and artistic expression.

We believe that a great fireworks display is much more than a sequence of explosions. It is a carefully designed performance in which colours, effects, rhythm, symmetry, movement, and music come together to create a unique experience.

The Guild operates independently of commercial fireworks companies.

Our Mission and Activities

Our activities focus on four key areas:

01

Fireworks as an Art Form

Promoting creative expression and artistic quality in fireworks displays, including pyromusicals choreographed to music.

02

Training and Professional Development

Developing members’ technical knowledge and practical skills through training, exercises, and participation in fireworks displays.

03

Safety and Responsibility

Establishing consistent operating procedures and promoting safe, responsible practices in accordance with Finnish legislation.

04

Cooperation

Working with authorities, fireworks importers, and other organisations involved in the pyrotechnics industry.

The Guild was approved as a fireworks display organiser by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) in September 2026.

What Is a Pyroteknikko?

A Pyroteknikko (Pyrotechnician) is a member of the Guild who has fulfilled its training and practical experience requirements and participates in the planning and execution of fireworks displays.

The Guild’s Pyroteknikko designation is an internal qualification based on demonstrated knowledge, training, and practical experience. It should not be confused with a separate statutory professional licence.

A Pyroteknikko combines technical expertise with an understanding of artistic design, safety requirements, and the practical challenges of producing fireworks displays.

Training

Our training programme includes approximately 10 hours of theoretical instruction, 15 hours of practical training, a training display, and participation in at least one additional approved fireworks display under experienced supervision.

Responsible Pyrotechnician

A separate role, Vastaava Pyroteknikko (Responsible Pyrotechnician), handles the Guild’s administrative display procedures, including reviewing display plans and coordinating required notifications to the police. This role requires passing the relevant Tukes examination.

From Music to Fireworks

One of our particular interests is the development of pyromusicals — fireworks displays precisely choreographed to music.

Creating a pyromusical involves analysing the music, selecting suitable effects, designing firing positions, programming ignition sequences, and simulating the performance before moving to the actual firing site.

Safety planning, technical preparation, and teamwork are essential throughout the process.

A performance lasting just a few minutes may require hundreds of hours of combined planning, preparation, and practical work.

Insane Insomnia — PyroFest 2026

At PyroFest 2026 in Hyvinkää, Finland, the Guild presented Insane Insomnia, a pyromusical lasting 4 minutes and 53 seconds.

The performance demonstrated the combination of music, modern firing technology, artistic design, and dedicated volunteer work.

The Guild has published an article about the project, including videos of the actual performance and a comparison between the computer simulation and the final display.

Membership and International Cooperation

The Guild welcomes people interested in the art and technology of fireworks. Membership opportunities include general membership and roles requiring specific training and experience.

The Pyroteknikko designation has additional eligibility requirements, including Finnish citizenship and a minimum age of 18.

Although our activities are primarily based in Finland, we welcome professional contacts, exchanges of knowledge, and cooperation with pyrotechnicians and fireworks organisations internationally.
